Reflections from Seeing David Goggins Live
-Written by Shannon Harnett
Last week, I had the opportunity to see David Goggins live.
If you’ve caught glimpses of the event on socials, you might have noticed it was a mixed bag! Some speakers were inspiring, but others were blatantly pushing their products. It was fascinating — once I got past the frustration — how off-putting their techniques were.
Many attendees felt the same, and it made me think about how we spend something even more valuable than money: our time.
We all get the same 168 hours each week. Here’s how mine generally breaks down:
- 56 hours sleeping (or trying to)
- 40 hours working
- 30 hours on life admin—cooking, eating, showering, etc.
- 10 hours exercising, thanks to my very active dog
- 10 hours reading nonfiction (on a good week)
That leaves 22 hours unaccounted for! Where does it all go?
As an accountant, I resist time audits (flashbacks to timesheets!). But I’m pretty sure there’s some real waste in there—likely spent scrolling social media or watching TV. Both can be relaxing, but they’re also black holes of time if we’re not mindful.
This event was a great reminder to be intentional with our time. After all, we can’t make more of it. What would you do with an “extra” 22 hours a week? What would Goggins do (WWGD)? I imagine he would fit in another run or a few thousand pull ups.
